Regarding #2: Somebody I was talking to at ION says that certification won't be required for changes that don't touch client code. If much of the client logic happens in scripts or data, they may not have to re-certify for many patches. Of course that ignores the fact that it's easy to break a game just by changing data and especially by changing scripts, but it will make life easier for console MMO devs.

Great post that's a fresh breath of air with its concise, concrete points, rather than some essayistic rambling, as is so often seen in a console-pc-related discussion. I have one small correction, though.

Your point about console lifetime in #4 should have its own point, as it is possibly one of the most significant ones. Having to be a succes from day one and hardly having the time to both develop the game gradually and also reap the benefits of a game well done is pivotal deterrent worth noting. Just look at games such as Anarchy Online (which has gone through a rollercoaster of a ride practically worth doing a book on) and of course WoW, but also EvE, which goes to show the importance and gratification of creating a vast universe and community you hypothetically could build upon infinitely. Same goes for MapleStory and its ilk.
